Peer-to-Peer and the BitTorrent Lineage
Peer-to-peer (P2P) is the architecture in which every participant is both client and server, so there is no central machine an authority can seize to stop the system. Its two-decade history of file-sharing is the practical proof of a single idea the cypherpunks had asserted in theory: that you can shut down a company but not a protocol. It is the direct architectural ancestor of Bitcoin.
The lineage: removing the central point
The file-sharing story is a sequence of steps, each removing a central point of failure the previous generation was killed at.
- Napster (1999–2001) distributed the files peer-to-peer but kept a central index of who had what. That index was a single company, and a single company can be sued: Napster was shut down by court order, its architecture’s one central component its fatal flaw.
- Gnutella answered by removing the index entirely — searches flooded outward from peer to peer, so there was no server to seize and no company to enjoin. It traded efficiency for the absence of a center.
- BitTorrent (2001), designed by Bram Cohen, made decentralized distribution efficient. It breaks a file into pieces and lets a swarm of downloaders trade pieces with each other as they go, so popular files get faster as more people join rather than overloading one source. Its remaining semi-central element, the tracker that coordinated swarms, was later made optional by distributed hash tables (DHT), which spread the coordination itself across the peers — leaving, finally, nothing central to shut down.
Why it could not be stopped
The lesson is the one the wiki states as trusted third parties are security holes: every central component is a point of control, so an architecture with no center has no lever for an outside party to pull. Enforcement could take down individual users, seed servers, or indexing websites, but the protocol itself — a way for peers to find and trade pieces directly — kept running because it was not located anywhere in particular. This is censorship resistance as a property of design rather than of law or goodwill, and file-sharing was where it was first proven at scale against a determined and well-funded adversary.
The bridge to Bitcoin
The connection to the wiki’s monetary thread is not an analogy but a lineage. Satoshi Nakamoto titled the Bitcoin whitepaper Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, and the design is P2P architecture applied to money. But money required solving a problem file-sharing never had. Sharing wants copying — the whole point is that everyone can have a copy of the file. Money must forbid it: a coin I send you must stop being mine, or it is not money. That is the double-spending problem, and solving it in a network with no central ledger-keeper is what proof of work and the longest-chain rule accomplish. BitTorrent proved decentralized distribution survives enforcement; Bitcoin added decentralized scarcity. The second was impossible without the architectural template the first established.
